Gender Nationalism and the Political

Nationalism and citizenship have become important in political and academic circles. However, most work in these areas overlooks the fact that nationalisms and concepts of citizenship are always gendered and raced, and they are typically articulated in relation to heterosexuality and family. Some of our faculty are engaged in research on these topics. Others investigate and teach in other areas of the political. These other areas include but are not limited to the gendered discourses of contemporary conservative parties; the political agency of women on the left and of women on the right; law as a tool for social change; and the historical and contemporary political work constituting different moments in feminist activism throughout the world. Important questions raised in this area of specialization query what future feminist engagement might look like. Is it possible to develop non-imperialist models of engagement among women in different countries and from different religious and cultural backgrounds? To what extent can domestic or international law function as a catalyst for positive social change?
