Department of Gender Studies
Our program sees theory as important to understanding the many material and symbolic phenomena related to gender. Thus theory is incorporated at some level into almost every class the department offers. Students acquire skills for reading and employing theory in their pursuit of the intellectual, social, and political questions that motivate their own research. The following list indicates some of the many types of theory in which our faculty specializes: feminist theory; post-modern and post-structural theory; social change and activism; historical analysis; hermeneutics; cultural studies; literary theory; queer theory; theories of the body and sexuality; postcolonial theory; psychoanalysis; legal theory; critical race theory; film theory; and third-wave feminism.
