Department of Gender Studies
Members of our department pursue research and teach courses that examine culture in its “high” (e.g. literary studies) and “low” (e.g. detective fiction, pop culture, fashion, etc.) forms, as well as visual culture. Students and faculty pursue theories for reading these different cultural forms and for understanding them as expressions and sites for the negotiation of power, gender and various other social identities. This focus area includes faculty whose research lies in the sub-fields of literary studies, film theory, cultural studies, social semiotics, and cultural anthropology.
