Department of Gender Studies
Gender Studies at CEU
The Department of Gender Studies at CEU is one of the most developed and sophisticated departments of its kind in the world. Unlike many gender studies programs that rely on affiliated faculty based in other departments, our department has its own faculty and curriculum. We are unique in offering an MA and Ph.D., as well as other degree and non-degree options for study. Additionally, gender as it relates to other structures of power and identities (class, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, able-ness, etc.) is always forefronted in our curriculum and in our many scholarly exchanges in and out of the classroom. With students and faculty coming from over twenty different countries, contemporary issues around globalization, nationalism, EU policy, cultural identity, etc. are woven into the scholarly and social life of the department in rich and fascinating ways.
The larger Central European University is an international university in the truest sense: Its students come from over 60 countries, the majority from Central and Eastern Europe and Russia; its faculty comes from more than 30 countries-with the mix of nationalities increasing every year. The university’s unique combination of American, Western European and regional intellectual and academic traditions enables CEU to place emphasis on the shifting boundary between the local and the universal in the theoretical, as well as the practical aspects of research and teaching.
CEU is a founding member of the European University Association (EUA). The EUA, as the representative organization of both the European universities’ and the national rectors’ conferences, is the leading voice of the higher education community in Europe. As a European university, CEU seeks to become part of the European higher education area envisioned by the Bologna process.
