The Department of Gender Studies is now accepting applications for academic year 2009-10 for the 2-year MA in Critical Gender Studies.

The M.A. degree in Critical Gender Studies is designed as a vehicle for educating and training future generations of gender specialists in the fields and professions that most need such specialists in order to address the many gendered political, cultural and social challenges of contemporary society. These professions may include but are not limited to education, academic research, social services (non-governmental organizations for instance), policy, government advising and applied research, journalism, as well as jobs that entail various kinds of cultural production. Gender studies in the two-year program is defined as “critical” Gender Studies, signaling the ways in which the program is organized around teaching students to critically analyze existing ideas, systems, and inequalities that decrease the possibilities for women and men to fully reach their human potential. The program aims to impart on students rigorous training in critical gender analysis, writing, research skills, oral presentations, and non-paid internships.

As a result, students would be well positioned to pursue careers involving professional expertise in gender-related issues. They will have an expertise that is in demand (such as someone familiar with refugee policy and women’s issues), combined with practical skills in demand in the labor market (writing, analysis, English fluency, research skills, oral presentation skills, management skills of flexibility and complexity, etc.). The program will provide these skills to each student and allow them the possibility of developing additional skills and knowledge in one of the two special tracks, namely: specialization in research (with a focus on excellent research in gender studies), specialization in applied gender studies (requiring special training through a guided internship in a field of the student’s choice, e.g. journalism; legal counsel; etc.)

The 2-year MA program involves coursework, thesis, and an oral examination of the thesis. It contains two “tracks.” One track allows students to pursue coursework and a thesis that helps prepare students to enter into a Ph.D. program in any number of disciplines. The skills taught in this track are suitable not only for further professional training to become a university professor, but also for numerous other professions.

The second track in the 2-year MA program is oriented toward students wishing to become a gender professional. As a gender professional, students may enter numerous careers in governmental organizations (such a national policy development or work for a UN organization) or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). We developed this track in response to a growing need in the market for people specially trained to help develop and enact gender-equity programs and policy. Students in this track must complete coursework, an extensive, meaningful, well-supervised internship, and write a thesis which builds from research conducted during their internship.

This program does not entail a mobility scheme. Thus, students spend their two years at CEU, except for the time spend conducting research for the thesis (such as an internship or archives).

HU accreditation means that this degree is recognized throughout EU countries. Students in this program will be eligible for fellowships and tuition waivers.
